This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
